Relocating for BRAC? Why Howard and Anne Arundel Counties are where YOU should live!
Real Estate
Kent Menser, the liaison for all BRAC
information for Howard County (BRAC = Base Closure & Realignment
Commission), spoke to our team a few weeks ago, and gave us a great
overview of the relocation schedule for the growth at Ft. Meade/NSA .

If you’re military personnel and you are starting to think about
relocating here with your family, there is an abundance of
neighborhoods to choose from, and a wide range of housing prices to
meet any homeowner’s criteria. Howard and Anne Arundel counties, the
closest locations to Ft. Meade, may give you sticker shock if you are
coming from the Mid-West. These counties have neighborhoods that are
just great for raising young families, excellent public school systems,
and an emphasis on extracurricular sports and cultural activities.
Additionally, there is a variety of different types of housing options,
such as townhouses in all price ranges, ranchers and single family
homes, just to name a few.
It used to be said that the Washington
area was recession-proof, because so many are directly or indirectly
employed by the Federal government. The term I’m hearing now is
“recession-resistant” to describe our corridor. There seems to be less
unemployment around here and more long-term stability in housing than
in many parts of the U.S.
Housing prices in both Howard & Anne Arundel counties are down from
their highs of two years ago, and there are many good deals to be had.
A young couple buying their first home this month commented to me,
“Either we are crazy, or we are looking at the buying opportunity of a
lifetime!” But with lower housing prices, low interest rates, and a
wide selection of homes for sale, anyone moving into this area will be
able to get more home for their money than they could have even a year
ago.
